Crawl Space Insulation

Increase Energy Efficiency by Adding Crawl Space Insulation

You might not think about your crawl space very often, much less crawl space insulation, but that small space under your home can lead to issues far beyond its size. Crawl spaces under homes are ideal harbors for dampness, mold, and pests. The humid soil surrounding the crawl space contributes to the space becoming damp, which then makes it a prime location for mold and pests.

Think this damp space is isolated and doesn’t affect the interior of your home? Think again. The natural airflow of a home is from bottom to top (ground to sky). As your home naturally breathes, the moist air (and everything in it) flows up and into the living areas of the home.

It’s time to consider insulation for crawl spaces. But should a crawl space be insulated? Absolutely! Taking the time to properly insulate and air seal your home’s crawl space will help cut down on these issues down the line and save you energy on your very next bill. Our skilled insulation team at Southland Insulators has the experience to help you determine the best crawl space insulation options for air sealing and insulating your crawl space, helping make you and your family more comfortable in your home.

Crawl Space Insulation Installation Process

Our team is expertly trained and understands how to insulate a crawl space and properly air seal it. This involves three steps:

  1. Drain Fabric. This layer prevents the crawl space liner from “sticking” to the soil and enhances the water drainage below the liner. We use liners that are made of 100% polypropylene fibers that won’t rot or decay.
  2. Floor Liner. This layer, the crawl space insulation vapor barrier, seals out moisture and soil gasses while being unaffected by storage items or foot traffic. We utilize multi-ply, 22 mil floor liners that have a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty.
  3. Spray or Rigid Foam Insulation. We then install the insulation of the type and R-value of your choice. Both spray foam and rigid foam board are excellent crawl space insulation options and provide insulation while allowing the walls of the crawl space to breathe. The foam material is resistant to both mold and pests.

Benefits of Insulating Your Crawl Space with Foam

Not sure what type of insulation for your crawl space is best? Consider these two crawl space insulators. Rigid foam and spray foam are moisture- and pest-resistant. Spray foam naturally seals air leaks which puts an end to air leaks that waste energy. It is a durable long-term solution that won’t compress, fall out of place, or lose R-value. Investing in spray foam or rigid foam insulation for your crawl space will immediately make your home more energy efficient for years to come.
